What Is A Consultant?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary:

Consult : 1. To seek advice or information of. 2. to exchange views, confer. 3. To give expert advice as a professional.

Consultant : a person who gives expert or professional advice

Okay, that’s plain enough. But what does a consultant actually do? In the simplest of explanations, as the dictionary explains, he provides advice based upon experience, study, research, and a continuous involvement within the industry in which he is dedicated. His information should be relevant, factual, and timely. It should be well thought out, thorough, accurate, and complete.

A consultant should have the ability and wherewithal to research industry standards, practices, and regulations.

Therefore, the consultant’s “product” is information. Much like an attorney who is paid not only for his knowledge of the law, but also his ability to research important areas, his product is one of advice. Because of this being true, a good consultant will provide an invaluable service to both you and your business. It is for this reason that all time spent with a client for the purpose of disseminating information, including phone calls, visits, and any other similar activities performed for and on behalf of the client by ACGI, be accounted for and billed according to agreement.
